· I have a Atheros Wifi card on my laptop and I'm using gentoo kernel. For the Atheros card it is best to use madwifi-ng, even if there is a kernel support for the device. I've been emerging and adjusting, unmerge, emerge adjust, unmerge all a whole long time just to try every bit but still fails. Please note - the current madwifi driver in ~x86 (madwifi-driver_prer1) works fine with my WG for scanning and my script. This is the only instance of a madwifi-driver based card I know of that doesn't work with my script for scanning. preferred_aps=("ESSID1" "ESSID2") works fine though _____.

The Netgear WAG is an Atheros based a/b/g card which uses the madwifi-ng drivers. A Gentoo package is available but I've stuck to. If a WiFi connection is needed while installing Gentoo, note that the Gentoo minimal install CD has a limited number of drivers available.
